DELIPOPS are the result of a hot August afternoon in Verona. We were on our first holiday with our one year old son, Ben. Down a cobbled side street we stumbled on a small gelateria with an old ice lolly maker in the back. More refreshing than ice cream we were immediately hooked on their Gacciolo, Italian for ice lolly. They came in all sorts of fruit flavours and brought back great memories of family summers growing up. Back home in St. Agnes, Cornwall, we were disappointed when we couldn’t find anything to satisfy our new ‘proper’ ice lolly addiction. We were also horrified by the amount of junk there was in the ice lollies we remember enjoying as kids. Surely people in Britain deserved better, we thought.
Starting with a few plastic moulds, a freezer in our front room and a stall at Truro farmers market we began making and selling our completely natural ice lollies. We used the best locally sourced fruit and ingredients. We took ideas from all around the world, as well as closer to home, to design a range of delicious flavours. The response from people was always the same, these are amazing where can I buy them? So we started stocking them in local shops and cafes. A year later we moved our freezer out of the front room and into a small catering kitchen round the corner. We bought an old Italian ice pop maker, much like the one in the old Gelateria in Verona. Our natural ice lollies are now sold in beach cafes and farm shops across Cornwall and they are the talk of festivals and events throughout the summer. We still think that the rest of Britain deserves a better ice lolly though so this year we are spreading our wings and our lollies are avaliable nationwide!
